BUSY Sister Chanan is now a fully qualified spray painter!

Finishing her apprenticeship in record time, hardworking Chanan is now a fully qualified spray painter and she attributes a large part of her success to the BUSY Sisters mentoring program.

Reflecting on what inspired her apprenticeship journey, Chanan said, “It really all started when my dad and I repaired broken jet skis together. He handed me a spray gun and the rest is history. I’m beyond thrilled to see myself recognised as a tradesperson, rather than just a girl in the workshop.

“Being a female in a male-dominated trade wasn’t easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding. The support I’ve received from the BUSY Sisters program has been a game-changer. Finding female trade peers was challenging, so discovering BUSY Sisters was like finding a treasure. The program’s engagement and community support were invaluable throughout my apprenticeship. A truly understanding support system, my mentor was crucial in encouraging me, helping me navigate the ups and downs, and above all making the difference between persevering (and succeeding) and giving up.

“BUSY Sisters offered more than just professional advice; they provided a sense of belonging and a reminder that I am not alone in this journey. The encouragement from fellow women in the group and the broader community helped me feel supported and motivated. It’s comforting to know that there are others who understand the unique challenges of being a woman in trades.”

Like Chanan, a growing number of women in Australia are looking outside the square when it comes to career choices and, coupled with the current skills shortages in trade industries, they’re finding excellent opportunities. BUSY Sisters is a mentoring program designed to support and guide career paths for female apprentices in non-traditional trades (normally male-dominated trades). The program aims to empower and encourage women to succeed in whatever career path they choose, connecting participants to experienced mentors (who have worked in non-traditional trades) and a community of like-minded women.

To other women considering or currently in male-dominated trades, Chanan says, “My advice is to remember your worth. You bring valuable skills and a unique perspective to the field. Continue to challenge yourself, embrace your strengths, and know that you are exceptional. BUSY Sisters has been a beacon of support for me, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to any woman navigating this demanding industry. It’s a vital resource that provides not only guidance but also a community where you can thrive and feel truly supported. Lastly, let your passion drive you and remember you deserve to be in trades. Be the BOSS you know you are!”
