Goal Setting Made Simple – the KISS Method

Small Steps, Big Success

Life can feel busy. Between work, study, family, friends, finances, and everything else going on, it can sometimes feel overwhelming to think about the future.

The good news? You don’t need to have your whole life figured out today. 💙

Goal setting isn’t about creating pressure or setting impossible expectations. It’s about giving yourself direction, building confidence, and creating a plan that helps you move towards the life you want—one step at a time. At BUSY Sisters, we call this the KISS Method – Keep It Simple, Sister!

Why Goal Setting Matters

Goals help turn ideas and dreams into action.

When you know what you’re working towards, it’s easier to stay motivated, focused, and confident. Goals give you a sense of purpose and help you recognise the progress you’re making along the way.

The best goals are the ones that matter to you—not what someone else thinks you should do.

Start With What You Want

Before setting goals, take some time to think about what is important to you.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I enjoy doing?
  • What am I good at?
  • What makes me feel happy or proud?
  • What would I like my life to look like in the future?
  • What do I want more of in my life?

You can think about different areas such as:

💰 Finances
❤️ Relationships
📚 Education and Learning
💼 Career and Work
🏃 Health and Wellbeing
🎨 Hobbies and Interests
🌱 Personal Growth

Think About What You Don’t Want

Sometimes it’s easier to identify what you want by first thinking about what you don’t want.

For example:

“I don’t want to constantly stress about money.”

“I don’t want to avoid trying new things because I’m scared of failing.”

“I don’t want to stay stuck in a job I don’t enjoy.”

“I don’t want to neglect my wellbeing.”

Once you know what you’d like to change, you can start setting goals that move you in a positive direction.

The KISS Method: Keep It Simple, Sister!

Big goals can feel intimidating, but they don’t have to be.

Keep things simple by:

✅ Breaking large goals into smaller steps
✅ Focusing on one thing at a time
✅ Celebrating small wins along the way
✅ Being realistic about what you can achieve right now

Remember: Progress is better than perfection.

Why Small Wins Matter

Every time you achieve a goal—no matter how small—your brain rewards you with a little boost of motivation and confidence.

Small wins help you:

  • Build positive habits
  • Increase self-belief
  • Stay motivated
  • Create momentum
  • Feel more confident tackling bigger challenges

Small steps every day often achieve more than huge bursts of effort occasionally. 🏆 Success is rarely one giant leap—it’s lots of small steps repeated consistently.

The 3-Step Goal Setting Process

1. Define Your Goal

Be specific about what you want to achieve.

Instead of: ❌ “I want to be more successful.”

Try: ✅ “I want to complete a short course by December.” ✅ “I want to save $20 per week.” ✅ “I want to improve my fitness by walking three times a week.”

Make sure your goal is realistic and achievable.

2. Break It Down

Big goals become easier when you divide them into smaller milestones.

For example:

  • Long-term goal: Save for a holiday.
  • 12-month goal: Save $2,000.
  • 3-month goal: Save $500.
  • Weekly action: Put aside $40 each week.

Each milestone gives you something to work towards and a reason to celebrate your progress. 🎉

3. Create an Action Plan

Ask yourself:

  • What is the first step?
  • What can I do this week?
  • What support do I need?
  • When will I start?

Write your goals down and give yourself a timeframe. Seeing your goals regularly can help keep you focused and accountable.

Think About Your Future

Thinking five years ahead can feel overwhelming—and that’s okay.

You don’t need all the answers.

Instead, think about:

  • What kind of life you’d like to create
  • Skills you’d like to develop
  • Experiences you’d like to have
  • Values that are important to you

Then work backwards.

Focus on:

  • Long-term goals
  • 12-month goals
  • 3-month goals
  • Weekly actions

The journey starts with the next small step.

Don’t Do It Alone

You don’t have to figure everything out by yourself.

Talking with a mentor, coach, trusted friend, family member, or support network can help you:

  • Stay accountable
  • Gain new perspectives
  • Build confidence
  • Overcome challenges
  • Keep moving forward when motivation drops

Asking for support is a strength, not a weakness.
